Bible References
Nazareth is only mentioned in the New Testament bible although in Matthew 2:23, it was stated that “…He {referring to Jesus) shall be called a Nazarene”.
In Luke 1:26, Nazareth was described as a city of Galilee:
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth. (Luke 1:26, NKJV)
Why is Jesus called Jesus of Nazareth?
Nazareth is so unknown, so lacking in prominence that it was not mentioned in the old testament bible. Yet, God chose Nazareth to be the home town of Jesus. And even when Peter use Jesus’ name to pray for the lame man, Peter said “Jesus of Nazareth”.
This fact amazes me. But one thing I know is that our God is such a compassionate God that He chooses the least. His grace is so attracted to the smallest, the weakest, the least. Perhaps this is one reason why God chose Nazareth.
ACTS 3:6
In the book of ACTS, when the apostle Peter heal a lame man at the Temple, Peter said this:
” …In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!”
ACTS 22:8
In ACTS 22:8, apostle Paul described his encounter with Jesus:
“…So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.”
